Important Information

Hand washing is being recommended by the NHS as one of the key ways of reducing the spread of swine flu.

The virus can be passed from person to person via tiny droplets which are released into the air during a cough or a sneeze. If an infected person covers their nose or mouth when they sneeze, these droplets will then be transferred on to their hands.

Swine flu is thought to survive on the hands for only a few minutes, but if the virus is transferred to surfaces such as door handles and light switches it will potentially contaminate the next person to touch that surface.

The NHS recommends:

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing

• Throw away your used tissues immediately

• Wash your hands with soap and water immediately after coughing or sneezing and at regular intervals
